Key Stage 4 Design and Technology

GCSE Textiles

Pupils will demonstrate an expressive response through the use of fabrics, fibres and dyes, or a variety of other suitable materials. Where possible, pupils will be encouraged to explore a range of available techniques and processes such as traditional approaches, use of ICT, and laser cutters.

Pupils should show how fabric and fibres are used in a fashion context by demonstrating the use of a range of processes such as fashion design and garment making, fabric construction, body adornment, accessories or surface decoration.

Printed and/or Dyed:
Candidates should show an understanding of a variety of different media, such as commercial fabric paints and crayons, fabric printing inks or other application methods.

Expressive Textiles:
Candidates are expected to use some of the traditional materials and processes of fashion and textiles, but in an explorative manner, which questions the role of fabric and craft within contemporary society.


GCSE Product Design

Pupils will create visual meaning through three-dimensional art by expressing functional and/ or decorative responses to a starting point, brief, scenario or stimulus. Pupils should demonstrate how they can problem solve by designing or creating products which have a decorative or functional role. Pupils will work with a range of materials such as wood, metal, plastic and glass.


GCSE Food and Nutrition

Pupils studying food and nutrition will:

  • Demonstrate effective and safe cooking skills by planning, preparing and cooking using a variety of food commodities, cooking techniques and equipment
  • Develop knowledge and understanding of the functional properties and chemical processes as well as the nutritional content of food and drinks Understand the relationship between diet, nutrition and health
  • Understand the economic, environmental, ethical, and socio-cultural influences on food availability, production processes, and diet and health choices
  • Understand and explore a range of ingredients and processes from different culinary traditions (traditional British and international), to inspire new ideas or modify existing recipes
