Pupils in Year 7 and 8 follow the KS3 National Curriculum and programme of study including English, mathematics, science, languages, humanities, technology, the arts and physical education. Due to the schools firm belief that important skills in literacy and numeracy further allow pupils to access the wider curriculum, on entry to the school those entering with below national standards in reading and/or writing receive an additional 2 hours per week of literacy intervention which continues into Year 8. This is instead of studying a modern foreign language. Literacy development is further supported through humanities lessons. In Year 7 for mathematics, opportunities for ‘Saturday School’ tutor sessions and in-school small group intervention are available for identified pupils. The aim of Intervention at Key Stage 3 is to close the gap between pupils and provide them with the foundations in literacy and numeracy needed to access the Key Stage 4 curriculum.
Class work and homework is marked and constructive comments are provided as well as an effort grade after each section is completed. All units are centre-assessed and externally moderated by OCR. There are no timetabled exams for this qualification. The full award and units from this qualification are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Provision for Additional Educational Needs
For the most able there is increased pace, breadth and depth in their ICT activities to extend the range of their ICT capability and quality of thinking. Pupils are challenged to reach the highest grades of distinction and distinction *. After school provision is available and a high level of software to those who have a high level of competence in ICT. Pupils with Special Educational Needs are supported with in class support.
